U.S. business travel volume expected to increase in 2016

According to the Global Business Travel Association (GBTA), U.S. business travel spending is expected to advance 3.7% to $306.7 billion in 2016.  This is a positive sign for the economy and the hospitality industry, but a costly one for business travelers and their employers.

Travel and face-to-face interactions with customers and colleagues are necessities in today’s global economy—especially when establishing new relationships and opportunities.  First impressions are everything, and being able to read body language is invaluable.  However, many “routine” business trips can be eliminated by communicating via video conference. With improvements in quality, availability and ease-of-use, it is the next best thing to being there.

So how do you determine the ROI of a video conferencing system?  Simply calculate the number of trips taken annually, multiplied by the cost (airfare, rental car, taxis, meals, salary of time lost traveling) versus the investment in video conferencing equipment (hardware, service, training, network).  Many organizations see that the cost of travel for just one employee can far outweigh the expense of a video conference system for the entire company.
